Seaman’s Friend Society is established.

Founded by a group of Christian laymen, it is located initially in Hanover Street Church. An independent Boston branch of the American Seaman’s Friend Society, it is incorporated in 1829. Its purpose is to provide for the spiritual and physical welfare of sailors. The organization builds its own church in 1830,* establishes a savings bank with the Boston Port Society in 1833, and a sailors’ home in 1836.* It moves to 175 Hanover Street in 1880, and opens a club house and lodging house on Hanover Street in 1893,* moves to Park Square in 1970 and Church Street in 1978. It becomes the New England Seafarer’s Friend Society, Inc., stops providing lodging in 2000, and instead concentrates on ship visits to both the Port of Boston and Port of Portland, Maine.
